The 2008 Iwate earthquake, officially named by the Japan Meteorological Agency the Iwate-Miyagi Nairiku Earthquake in 2008, struck northeastern Honshu, Japan, on June 14, 2008. The earthquake occurred in Iwate Prefecture at 39.0° N 140.9° E (about 60 miles (97 km) north-northwest of Sendai, 240 miles (390 km) north of Tokyo) at 8:47 a.m. on June 14, 2008. The magnitude of the quake was 7.2. The strongest shaking was recorded in Oshu, Iwate and Kurihara, Miyagi, both of which recorded a shindo of 6+.[4] The United States Geological Survey placed the magnitude at 6.8.
